Sensory Integration Therapy
Understanding and Supporting the Senses for Better Daily Functioning
Service Description
Sensory Integration Therapy is a specialized form of therapy that helps individuals better process and respond to the sensory information they receive from their environment. This includes what they see, hear, touch, taste, smell, as well as how they experience movement and balance. For most people, the brain automatically organizes and responds to sensory input so they can focus, move smoothly, and interact effectively with the world around them. However, for some — especially children with autism, ADHD, developmental delays, or sensory processing disorder (SPD) — these systems may not work efficiently. This can result in challenges such as overreacting or underreacting to sounds, textures, lights, or movement, leading to behavioral, emotional, and learning difficulties. What Is Sensory Integration Therapy? Sensory Integration Therapy is designed to help individuals make sense of confusing or overwhelming sensory input. Through structured, play-based activities guided by a trained occupational therapist, individuals are gently exposed to sensory experiences in a safe and controlled way. Over time, the brain learns to process and respond more appropriately to sensory information. Who Can Benefit? Sensory Integration Therapy is especially beneficial for: Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Individuals with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) Children with ADHD or learning challenges Individuals with developmental delays or neurological conditions Goals of the Therapy: Improve attention, focus, and learning Reduce sensory sensitivities or aversions Enhance emotional regulation and behavior Develop coordination, balance, and motor skills Support participation in daily routines and social interactions How It Works: Therapy sessions may include activities such as swinging, climbing, jumping, textured play, deep pressure touch, and balance exercises.
